What is the subject for your photo essay and where did you take your photographs? (1) The subject of my essay is urban decay. I took these photos around my neighborhood.
Why did you select this place? Why is it significant or important to you? (1) I selected this place because I know the area well and what places have been abandon.
What concept are you trying to portray about this topic? (1) The concept i'm trying to portray is the over growth of nature can physically destroy an object, but it can't take away the memories and feelings that come with that object.
Visually, how did your images capture the narrative or “story” of your essay? (1) I think my images captured my story well. All the images show a place where nature has begun to grow and reclaim it. All the areas I photographed probably had been in human contact but then were abandon.
Discuss: the order and arrangement of your photos and how you visually unified the series of photos? (2) I arranged the photo based on the contents of what was in the photo. The first two photos are in the same area and feature the same fence. The next three all have some sort of greenery in it. The next three all have abandon objects that once served an important purpose. The last two show extreme decay. The last photo of the end of the road also symbolizes the end of the essay.
Which photo is the strongest in the series? I believe that the strongest photo in the essay is the first photo. I think this because it is clear what the subject is. You can easily notice the decay surrounding the subject. The image also gives off an atmosphere of isolation and abandonment.
Describe the composition (2) (viewpoint, angle, lighting, etc) and technical aspects / editing (2) of one of the photos. For all the photos I used the photo filter sepia and put a vignetting around the edges. For most of the images I took the photo from a couple feet away facing the subject head on. But for a few I took the photo from more of a birds eye view. The day I took these photos was cloudy, so I had to go and edit the brightness of the photos.
